Welcome to Glasgow, Scotland’s largest and most vibrant city. After making yourself at home in your city centre hotel, it’s time to hit the streets for some exploration.
Glasgow is a former European City of Culture, and you’ll find lots of evidence for this accolade. Look out for the art-nouveau architecture of Charles Rennie Mackintosh or the grand Victorian buildings of red and blonde sandstone complete with intricate carvings.
For something a bit different why not join the City Centre Mural Trail, a colourful collection of 24 pieces of public art that can be seen throughout the city centre.
After a busy day of exploration join your Tour Director and fellow travellers to discover what this wonderful tour has in store. Later enjoy a free evening to dine independently in one of Glasgow’s many atmospheric eateries.
Overnight: Ibis City Centre, Glasgow (or similar) (2 nights)
Day 2 - Glasgow Sightseeing
After breakfast, it’s time to discover Glasgow. Our orientation tour will commence with the city centre with its impressive Victorian architecture. We’ll visit George Square to see the magnificent City Chambers (Town Hall) and the famous statues that include Queen Victoria, Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott.
Later hear the story of the wealthy merchants and their legacy as we travel through the historic Merchant City area and make our way to the Cathedral Quarter where we’ll see Glasgow Cathedral and the oldest house in the city, Provand’s Lordship.
Discover why Glasgow is affectionately known as “The Dear Green Place” as we tour through Glasgow Green then take a drive along the banks of the River Clyde to hear the story of the city’s shipbuilding heritage.
The tour ends in the bustling West End where we’ll see Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow University and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.
Day 3 - Glasgow - Glen Coe - Scottish Highlands
We leave Glasgow behind and head into the scenic beauty of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Enjoy a tour along the “bonnie, bonnie banks” and, if you wish, take to the water for an optional cruise on Loch Lomond to see Rob Roy’s cave.
Back on board the coach, enjoy a drive over sprawling Rannoch Moor then stop to admire the stunning panorama of Glen Coe, the weeping glen. Listen as your guide tells the tragic tale of the infamous massacre that took place here in 1692.
After a drive through Fort William stop at the Commando Memorial to admire the view of Ben Nevis, Britain’s tallest mountain. Next, travel through Glen Spean to reach our hotel in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park
Overnight: Carrbridge Hotel, Carrbridge (or similar)(2 nights)
Day 4 - Isle of Skye Excursion
We have a feature-packed excursion today. First, we stop at evocative Culloden Moor where we’ll see the site of the last battle ever fought on British soil. It was here that British forces routed Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite army.
Later take a drive along the banks of mysterious Loch Ness, keep a close watch in case “Nessie” makes an appearance!
We head westwards through the highland glens to see iconic Eilean Donan Castle sitting on its little island at the confluence of three lochs. Learn it’s colourful history before we head “Over the sea to Skye” using the modern road bridge.
There's a scenic drive through the attractive Sleat Peninsula, known as the garden of Skye before catching a ferry back to the mainland.
We’ll tour along the famous “road to the isles” passing the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct that has starred in the Harry Potter movies. We’ll return to our hotel for dinner.
Day 5 - Scottish Highlands - St. Andrews – Edinburgh
We start today with a drive through the towering Grampian Mountains to reach the attractive Victorian resort of Pitlochry. Enjoy free time here so you can visit the River Tummel to see the salmon leap.
Alternatively join the optional excursion to visit stately Blair Castle, the historic home of the Duke of Atholl. The Duke is the only man allowed his own standing army, The Atholl Highlanders.
Our last stop of the day is in the historic town of St Andrews, known worldwide as the home of golf. There’s time to explore this fascinating town and maybe pick up a souvenir of your travels.
Our journey continues with a drive over the Firth of Forth where we’ll get fabulous views of the mighty Forth Bridge.
