Full Tour Itinerary
Leaving the city behind, we make the short drive to the Hopetoun Estate, where we stop to view Midhope Castle, which dates from the 15th Century. This impressive Tower House is the filming location of Lallybroch, the family home of Jamie Fraser.
After time for photographs, we move upstream to visit Blackness Castle, which stands overlooking the Firth of Forth. This 15th-century castle was the home of the Crichton Family. Its impressive walls resemble a ship, so it was often known as “the ship that never sailed”. Fans will find it familiar as the setting for the Fort William headquarters of Black Jack Randall. If Blackness Castle is unavailable there will be a visit to Doune Castle instead. Overlooking the River Teith, this magnificent 13th-century fortress plays the part of Castle Leoch, the seat of Clan Mackenzie in the series.
Linlithgow Palace is the location of Wentworth Prison, where Jamie was imprisoned. In real life, it was once a Royal residence and was the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. We’ll make an extended stop here so you can explore this historic town and enjoy time for refreshments.
Next, we make our way to the quaint little town of Culross, which is the location of Cranesmuir. On our visit, it doesn’t take much imagination to relive 16th and 17th Century life as we walk amid the old buildings and cobbled streets of this Royal burgh on the banks of the River Forth.
From Culross, we travel further into the ancient Kingdom of Fife to visit Falkland. This delightful village was used as the filming location for Inverness. Look out for the Covenanter Hotel, which played the part of Mrs Baird’s B&B.
The Tyndall Bruce Fountain in the High Street was used in the scene where the ghost of Jamie appears when Claire is brushing her hair while staying at Mrs Baird’s.
Falkland reappeared as Inverness in Season 2. This time, the setting was the 1960s.
You can spend time relaxing in the village or take time out to visit Falkland Palace and Gardens which was a popular hunting lodge for several Scottish Monarchs including Mary, Queen of Scots.
The last stop of the day is in the town of South Queensferry, where we stop to enjoy the views of the Firth of Forth and the three bridges that span the estuary, including the mighty Forth Bridge, which opened in 1890 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A short drive brings us back to central Edinburgh.
