Full Tour Itinerary
Select Day:
Day 1 - Edinburgh - Doune - Inverness
Leaving Edinburgh behind we travel to the banks of the Firth of Forth to visit sinister Blackness Castle, the location of Black Jack Randall’s Fort William headquarters.
Impressive Linlithgow Palace is situated overlooking a loch and was the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots. This amazing 15th Century site played the part of Wentworth Prison and was where Jamie was imprisoned.
We travel onwards to the attractive village of Doune where you’ll have the chance to visit Doune Castle, the real-life Castle Leoch, home to the Clan Mackenzie. Nearby lies Deanston Distillery which played the part of the wine warehouse in Le Havre owned by Jamie’s cousin. We’ll stop to enjoy lunch here and, if you wish, a wee sample of whisky!
The Highlands beckon so we make our way across the wilderness of Rannoch Moor and into the majestic scenery of Glen Coe which features in the opening credits of Outlander. As you take in the stunning scenery hear the tragic story of the massacre that took place here in 1692.
Onwards through the real Fort William and into the Great Glen. We’ll make a stop to view the deep, dark and mysterious waters of Loch Ness before heading to Inverness, our home for tonight.
Overnight: Inverness
Day 2 - Inverness - Culloden Moor - Edinburgh
After breakfast, we make the short drive to visit ancient Clava Cairns which, it is said, were the inspiration for Craigh na Dun. These burial cairns are around 4,000 years old and are surrounded by a ring of standing stones.
Just a short drive away lies Culloden Moor, the site of the last battle ever fought on British soil. The Jacobite army of Bonnie Prince Charlie was routed in a short but bloody battle. This important event in Scotland's history changed life in the Highlands forever.
The scenic beauty of the Cairngorms National Park is our next treat. We’ll make a stop at the popular Highland Folk Museum, where you can enjoy lunch and discover how life was lived in the Highlands in days gone by.
The museum contains a recreation of a traditional 17th Century highland village complete with turf-roofed crofts, which were used for period filming.
Falkland, in the ancient Kingdom of Fife, was a popular retreat for the Scottish Kings and Queens. This charming village played the part of 1940s and 1960s Inverness. During our time here, you’ll also be able to discover other filming locations, including Mrs Baird’s Guesthouse and Campbell’s Coffee Shop.
Our final stop is a photo stop at Midhope Castle, the external location for Lallybroch, the family home of Jamie Fraser. From here, we return to the heart of Edinburgh and the end of our tour.
